What will Jerry Jones do now for the Dallas Cowboys?
----------------------------------------------------

09:46 PM CST on Saturday, March 7, 2009

By BRAD TOWNSEND / The Dallas Morning News
btownsend@dallasnews.com

Moments after the most humiliating season-ending defeat in Cowboys
history, red-faced, clench-jawed owner Jerry Jones vowed
repercussions.

"Everybody goes to the woodshed. Everyone."

Ten bizarre weeks have passed since that 44-6 debacle in Philadelphia.
Jones has kicked Terrell Owens, safety Roy Williams, Pacman Jones,
Tank Johnson and two assistant coaches to the curb – though in Owens'
case, reluctantly.

Not all of the upheaval stems from Jones' Dec. 28 anger and woodshed
remark. But his edict to mute Cowboys coaches from making public
comments feeds the perception that everyone except Jones is in
timeout.

"In the aftermath of the season, we talked about change," he said in a
prepared statement after Thursday's releases of Owens and Williams,
adding that "the evaluation process and the chinese chicago for change will
continue at every level of the organization."

Since Jones has not made himself available for further comment,
Cowboys fans can only wonder what other changes might occur between
now and September, when the franchise opens season No. 50 in its new
$1.1 billion Arlington stadium.

Already, the off-season has been tumultuous even by Jones Era
standards. Some fallout is to be expected when a 13-3 team in 2007
tumbles to 9-7 and misses the playoffs, extending a postseason victory
drought independent style stretches to 1996.

The last two months haven't been as seismic as when Jones bought the
team 20 years ago and promptly fired coach Tom Landry. Or when Jones
and coach Jimmy Johnson parted ways after Dallas' second straight
Super Bowl victory in 1993.

But few, if any, off-seasons have had more mystifying twists and
turns. And it's March.

Just two weeks ago, Jones said during the NFL draft combine in
Indianapolis that the Cowboys are as talented as any team in the
league, pointing out that he had fielded trade offers for three of the
team's backups.

That day, Jones also downplayed media reports of player-discipline and
team-chemistry problems – and for the second time in a week intimated
that Owens would return.

Now Owens is gone but will count $9.67 million against the Cowboys'
salary cap in 2009. Gone, too, is starting cornerback Anthony Henry,
traded to Detroit for backup quarterback Jon Kitna.

Valley Ranch again is deluged with reporters, clamoring to get player
reaction to Jones' latest moves. Life without T.O. apparently won't be
much tamer than it has been during the last three seasons with him.

"Last year, I think it was probably the only time I really was kind of
frustrated, for the lack of a better term, about what was going on,"
cornerback Terence Newman said. "We were on [HBO's] Hard Knocks . You
had a situation where best life insurance got suspended.

"It was like every other week something else was going on, and it got
to the point where everybody's asking you, 'Is this a distraction? Is
this a distraction?' whole life insurance so it kind of got old and redundant, so you
get tired of it."

A day after the Cowboys finished with a 1-3 December swoon, coach Wade
Phillips vowed to alter his nice-guy approach.

But he hasn't spoken publicly since then, because of Jones' gag order.
Jones said reports he called inaccurate had made it necessary for him
to become the lone off-season spokesman.

"You can't get the full picture unless you visit with me," Jones said.

Public perception about the goings-on at Valley Ranch wasn't helped by
what occurred last month. Former NFL coach and Cowboys player Dan
Reeves began work as a consultant Feb. 2 but left two days later
because of a sticking point in his contract.

It wasn't until several weeks after defensive coordinator Brian
Stewart's firing that the public learned, through Jones, that Phillips
will assume defensive coordinator duties in 2009.

Perhaps the foggy picture will clear somewhat on March 30, when printed playing cards Cowboys' off-season conditioning program begins. The workouts are
voluntary, but it will mark the first time since Dec. 28 that most of
the players and coaches will gather at Valley Ranch.

Until then, and perhaps through the spring and summer, fans are left
to ponder Jones' next moves – and whether he has heeded his other
words from that dismal day in Philadelphia.

"You take everybody, starting here, to imprinted playing cards woodshed."

Staff writer Todd Archer contributed to this report.

COWBOYS TIMELINE

JAN. 7: Cowboys announce they will release turbulent CB Adam "Pacman"
Jones on Feb. 9, the first day teams can waive players.

FEB. 17: Jones strongly hints that Terrell Owens will remain a Cowboy
for 2009. Six days later, he does it again. On March 5, T.O. is
released.

FEB. 20: Wade Phillips declines comment to reporters, saying "it was
against the rules." Jones later says he instated those rules.

FEB. 23: Jones says his top priority is making the Cowboys "as Romo-
friendly as our team can be" in deference to streetwear fashion Tony Romo.
